It's time to pass it on!
Hello everyone! The YMCA at Virginia Tech is now on the search for two new Co-Directors for our Ytoss? 2010 event in May (collection) and August (sale). As the winner of the bronze 2009 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, and our recent expansion to Radford University, being Co-Director would be a perfect opportunity for you to get some great experience running a very important campus event. We need YOU to apply! Our brave Co-Directors from 2009, Zack Helmintoller and Alex Funk, will be passing the torch, but will still play an integral role in training the two incoming Co-Directors.
What is Ytoss?
The YMCA at Virginia Tech aims to reduce the waste going into landfills from Student Move Out each May with our Ytoss? program. Ytoss? cuts approximately $4,000 in dumping fees from VTR Move Out expenditures each year. The program is a recycling event designed to collect gently used items students typically "toss" during Move Out, including TVs, electronics, microwaves, refrigerators, furniture, rugs, clothing, hutches, fans and more. Non-refrigerated foods, paper products and laundry detergent (opened and unopened) are collected and donated to a local food bank as well. Ytoss? reduces items being deposited in landfills and increases Virginia Tech's sustainability efforts, while providing a substantial fundraising opportunity for the YMCA at Virginia Tech's leadership development and community service programs. All items collected during May Move Out will be resold during August Move In, at our annual Ytoss? Sale. This event, which takes place at our Y Center on North Main, is quickly becoming known as one of Blacksburg's most notorious garage sales.
The application is attached and is due electronically by noon on Monday, November 30th. E-mail it to BOTH Zack (zhelmintoller@vt.edu) and Alex (funka@vt.edu). Please feel free to contact any of us of you have questions about the event or application.
Hope you all will consider applying!

A HUGE thanks goes out to all of you who assisted us with
our 4th successful Ytoss? event this spring.
We had a total of 189 volunteers assisting at collection points and at the Y Center. That’s the highest number ever!!!!!
The collection this May went really well!
I made a VERY rough estimate of items that came in.
If anything, the numbers are lower than what we actually collected.
Garbage bags full of clothing = 100+
Fans = 80+
Hutches = 90+
Microwaves = 40+
Rugs = 240+
Shelves = 47
Crates of food = 40+
And much, much more: lamps, TVs, fridges, desks, chairs, bikes, plastic drawer sets, sofas, stereos, tables, vacuums, housewares, etc.
